ChromEx is a cloud service that stores its data on a server in the Google Cloud Platform. When the student writes an exam, data is first stored locally on the device and then synchronized to the cloud service. When a student does not write actively in the test, this synchronization takes place every 20 seconds.
Important to remember:
When tests are written in kiosk mode or other safe modes, ChromEx does not have access to the usual storage space on the student's Chromebook, but saves all data in something called the App Cache, which is a storage space that only the app has access to. The same goes for iOS, PC and Mac.
It is saved in an App cache that is unique per app and only the app has access to. This cache remains as long as the device does not want to clear it, for example if the device needs to be factory reset or if it starts to run out of storage space. However, the cache is cleared if you have the management policy for "Clear user data on reboot" for Chromebooks.
If the student loses the connection:
- The student can continue to write the test and everything is saved locally.
- Immediately when the student gets the connection back during the test, all data in the test will be synchronized to the cloud service.
- Should the time run out for the test, a dialog box will appear in the test stating that you should call in a teacher. You are then forced to try to submit the test five times and then you are given the choice to complete the test.
- The student closes the app and waits until it gets an internet connection again and then:
- Get help from the teacher to change the time on the exam so that the student has the opportunity to open the exam again.
- Open the exam on the SAME device as it was conducted on earlier and the locally stored copy of the exam will be synchronized up to the cloud service.
- Choose to submit the exam.
